The basic idea still seems viable : as a form of high-seas heavy-weather oil collection boom to be towed by its limbs, (which would be longer than shown in the model), behind two boats or ships, (ocean tugs might work well) .

These towing vessels could advance as a line, with two tugs to each diamond, or as a chain whose inner tugs towed one limb of two adjacent diamonds, forming a dragnet for the oil .

The tugs could be outfitted to incinerate the oil quickly, or to transfer it to a tanker (or tankers) via surface-floating hose .

Crazy diamond could be improved by ports to collect oil and pass it down the centers of its limbs to the towing boats ; however, i'm sure my imagining it as a stand-alone crewed vessel was an over-reach .
